The Basics of Making a Classic Musical Movie
If you were ever a big time musical
movie producer, do you feel that you have the right stuff to get things done?
Making a musical is unlike any other form of movie production, without the right
guidance it could easily become a very big flop in the box office in no time
flat. Not only will it require you to hire the right people as far as cast are
concerned, you need to have the right people in place for booms, choreography,
stage settings and sound work. This is anything but an easy task to say the
least, unfortunately many directors who have what they think is the right stuff
fail miserably.
So what does it take to make a
musical successful?
Well for one thing you will want to be
sure that all of the singing will be pre-recorded. This is to ensure that there
will be no miss-steps in the sound when the actor is dancing around the
soundstage. There would be nothing worse than the actor singing a bit, while
they are dancing and they run out of breath.
Another really big issue is the use of the boom microphones; often these
microphones can get in the way of the action that is taking place on stage or at
the location that is desired for the shot or sequence. There would be nothing
worse than having your lead singer or dancer in your production being hit by the
boom microphone or the boom being in the middle of the shot. This could even be
worse if the boom appears when you are shooting outside and are looking for the
natural effect for the movie. It is one of the most critical areas when it comes
to ensuring that all goes well on the sound stage. If you are not comfortable or
confident with the person operating the boom microphone, you really should look
for someone that has extensive experience. This will ensure that the recording
of the actors goes down without a hitch; otherwise you could end up costing
yourself a lot of money in retakes that could stall the production of the film.
When it comes to the dance segments of the film, there could be no more
importance for the use of a professional than here. Without the use of a
professionally trained choreographer, there could easily be many missed steps
and or mishaps. By not having the dancers or the actors who are set to do the
dancing in their proper place, things could easily become a very large problem.
Ensure that people know their cue when called upon, and that they know the steps
well prior to putting them in front of the camera. If the actors know where they
are suppose to be at all times, it keeps the action flowing and gets the show
moving quickly to a proper conclusion rather than an interrupted week of
confusion. This can be a very large problem as well, if you have actors in the film that really
know little about dancing. Hiring the right person for the job the first time
ensures that you are not taking take after take only to find that the person is
not right for the part.
Storyline is as important in musicals as in any other film, without the proper
storyline or even a plot to the movie people are left wondering exactly what it
is that they are watching and why. An excellent example of storyline would be
the musical production of Grease. Not only was this a smash hit in theaters, it
carried itself into a stellar performance in the big screen as well. The basic
musical enhancements of the film only intensified the actual storyline, this
made for the complete package that we all know and love. One never had to wonder
where the story was going, or even wonder why the movie was to be in the
beginning. Grease had flow, and with this flow can a simple yet very effective
way of telling the story through the combination of plot and music. There
have been a great many musicals that have found they’re share of success, from
the aforementioned Grease to the beach movies that had singing, dancing and a
very entertaining story to lead the way.
